Trump has marked the men's arrival as a major milestone ahead of his upcoming historic summit with Kim.

In April, Trump had stunned the world by accepting an invitation to meet Kim in an unprecedented sit-down.

But despite the evident progress, there will be numerous issues to discuss when the talks take place. -North Korea summit meeting. Now that the venue and date has been set, the world waits to see if Singapore will host a meeting that ushers in a new era of denuclearization and peace on the Korean Peninsula.

Trump heads into the summit hoping to gain an agreement from Kim to give up his nuclear weapons and end North Korea's ballistic missile programme.

They issued a joint statement on Wednesday thanking Trump saying, "We would like to express our deep appreciation to the United States government, President Trump, Secretary Pompeo, and the U.S. people for bringing us home". Mr Pompeo returned overnight with three captive Americans during his most recent trip. "And I think we're seeing the results of it with three Americans coming home".

But both Kang and Pompeo insisted that they agreed on the need for the "total, permanent and verifiable" denuclearization of the divided peninsula.

Kim Dong Chul, Kim Hak Song, and Kim Sang Duk - also known as Tony Kim - are the three US citizens who were held prisoner by Kim Jong Un's regime.

They were detained in 2017 and charged with "hostile acts" against the North Korean state.

"I really think we have a very good chance of doing something very meaningful", BBC quoted Trump as saying.

He adds of the talks between his administration and the North Korean government: "It's never been taken this far".

The location and date of the summit - the first ever between a sitting USA president and a North Korean leader - were revealed hours after 3 American prisoners were released by North Korea and arrived back in the United States.

One reported location, Singapore, has been floated by Trump. "Nobody thought we could be on this track in terms of speed", he said.

Plans for a summit between Trump and Kim follow months of angry exchanges between the two over Pyongyang's testing of nuclear weapons and long-range missiles, including some theoretically capable of reaching the U.S. mainland.
