Roethlisberger: Steelers Should Have Passed On Rudolph

It's been no secret that Ben Roethlisberger, the starting quarterback for the Pittsburgh Steelers, hasn't been happy with the Steelers' decision to draft Oklahoma State quarterback Mason Rudolph in the third round of the 2018 NFL Draft.

Appearing on "Path to the Draft" on the NFL Network, Rudolph was asked his opinion about Roethlisberger's post-draft comments and the rookie quarterback managed to be far more diplomatic with his answer than Big Ben had been with his initial remarks.

The Super Bowl-winning quarterback has been contemplating retirement for the last few offseasons. Roethlisberger questions where Rudolph's role will be.

On top of both Roethlisberger and Dobbs, Pittsburgh also has Landry Jones, who has long served as Roethlisberger's backup.

"Those two guys are who I feel the worst for", Roethlisberger offered.

"I'll be honest, I wasn't anxious about someone taking my job", Roethlisberger said.

"I'll still take it one year at a time and give it everything I have that one year, but that's what I feel comfortable telling [the Steelers]", Roethlisberger said about his time frame. He's a competitor. Obviously, he has a lot of confidence in himself, like I do. I don't know him personally, but I'm sure he's a great kid. I assume Landry's still the [backup], I don't really know. I don't really know.

Later in the interview, Big Ben mentioned that maybe the Steelers "screwed up" another pick back in 2017. Past year you take him in the fourth round, so does that mean the Steelers screwed up that pick?

Roethlisberger has two years left on his contract, and team president Art Rooney II said this offseason that the team is prepared to discuss a contract extension with the quarterback. I'm just looking forward to going in there and learning the system, competing and raising my level of play. Landry does a great job at that, he did it previous year with Dobbs.

Rudolph told reporters last week that it will be his own job to learn rather than relying on Roethlisberger.

"So did they screw up the pick?" He appeared in all four of Pittsburgh's preseason contests past year and scored the game-winning touchdown against the Carolina Panthers in the last game of the preseason. " Roethlisberger said. "Or was he not as good as they thought?" I do feel bad for those guys. "If they think he can help our team, so be it, but I was a little surprised".
