Trump to appoint Belichick to White House Sports Council

The council will be co-chaired by former New York Yankees pitcher Mariano Rivera, Olympic volleyball player Misty May-Treanor and former Heisman Trophy victor Herschel Walker, according to the release.

President Donald Trump is filling out his roster for the "Council on Sport, Fitness, and Nutrition", and he's tapping into some prominent figures in the sports world.

During a New Hampshire rally on the night before the election, Trump read an endorsement letter from Belichick.

Trump appeared on Dr. Oz's show during the 2016 campaign to discuss his health and reveal the results of a brief health evaluation by his then-doctor Harold Bornstein. "I have a friendship with Donald".

Belichick along with several other sports celebrities, have been selected to join the Council, which has existed under various names since 1956.

A source told Axios that the council will be at the White House in the coming months for a "sports field day". Earlier this year, President Trump signed an executive order that detailed the way the council would be handled moving forward.

"When I was contacted by Ivanka Trump and asked to participate, I was humbled to be asked and honored to accept, as I would have done for any administration", the statement continued.

In 2015, Trump said Belichick hugged and kissed him on the Patriots' sideline during a game. Now the council will now promote participation in team sports instead. Other notable appointees include former Red Sox outfielder "Johnny David Damon of Florida" and former Yankees closer "Mariano Rivera of NY".
