Dino Melaye arraigned before an Abuja Court

The Senator representing Kogi West Senatorial district, Dino Melaye, has been remanded in police custody for the next 38 days pending the commencement of hearing in the suit brought by the Nigerian Police Force against him and three others.

Melaye is now facing a seven-count charge of criminal conspiracy and unlawful possession of firearms in Kogi State.

"The police will have no alternative but to return Mr Melaye to the National Hospital Abuja, especially since hospitals in Kogi State are all on strike".

"If anything happens to him, (Dino) the responsibility will be on the security agency".

Dogara maintained, "I don't think the law supports a situation whereby someone is in a dire health situation and is being arraigned most especially that that person is a Senator".

He further expressed his frustration with the prosecution of the lawmaker who is "not even in the right frame of mind to even take a plea".

This followed his arraignment on charges of gun running, conspiracy and aiding of jail break by the police.

Melaye is being accused of collaborating with suspects arrested for kidnapping, illegal possession of arms and political thuggery in Kogi state.

The lawmaker was brought to court in a police ambulance around 9:17 am. However, while leaving the court, he was picked up again by police.

Dogara however, frowned on the decision of the police to arraign Melaye in court while on a stretcher.

On March 1, Melaye was granted a N100,000 bail after he was asked to provide a surety who is not less than a level 14 in the Federal Civil Service.
