The Western attack on Syria on Saturday will not have any impact on the Syrian army's resolve to press the fight against militants and restore control of the entire country, the Syrian foreign ministry said.

Under U.N. rules, the Syrian ambassador to the forum, Hussam Edin Aala, will "represent the body in its relations with states, the General Assembly and other organs of the United Nations, and with other worldwide organizations".

Hezbollah deputy leader Sheikh Naim Qassem downplayed the rising tensions in Syria saying he did not believe it would spiral into a direct US-Russia conflict or a wider all-out war.

Yildirim on Friday again condemned the "heinous" the attack in Douma and said the perpetrators should "pay a price".

Russia, which has said it would militarily counter any strike launched against Syria, believes the reports of chemical attacks are part of a strategy created to justify foreign intervention.

"However ... any action that would lead to the failure or harm activities led by Turkey, Iran and Russian Federation toward a lasting peace should be avoided", Yildirim said.

Mr Trump has since tempered his remarks on attacking Syria and even as he consulted allies Britain and France, there were signs of efforts to prevent the crisis from spiralling out of control. More than 40 people, including children, were reported killed.

The Government, however, said evacuations from Douma were ongoing and no Syrian Government forces had entered the town.

The seriousness of the recent allegations of a chemical attack in Douma, Syria, requires a thorough investigation using impartial, independent and professional expertise, he said.

"I think we've seen the media reports of this horrific case, of the abuse and the murder of a young girl".

"Intelligence agencies of a state that is now striving to spearhead a Russophobic campaign were involved in that fabrication", he said. He didn't elaborate or name the state. On Saturday, the United States, British and French forces hammered Syria with air strikes in response to a poison gas attack that killed dozens of people last week, in the biggest intervention by Western powers in Syria's civil war.
