Israel's Netanyahu warns over Iran's presence in Syria

"A short time ago, I ordered the United States armed forces to launch precision strikes on targets associated with the chemical weapons capabilities of Syrian dictator Bashar al-Assad", Trump said in a primetime televised address to the nation.

"Israel fully supports [US President Donald] Trump's decision to act against the use of chemical weapons in Syria".

Netanyahu also called on Western powers to take the same approach toward preventing "terrorist states" from acquiring nuclear weapons, referring to Israel's main enemy Iran.

Lebanon's Iran-backed militant group Hezbollah early in the day said that Israel had made a "historic blunder" using all the attack.

"It should be clear to President Assad that his reckless efforts to acquire and use weapons of mass destruction, his wanton disregard for global law and his provision of a forward base for Iran and its proxies endanger Syria".

Israeli public radio reported that Western allies had given Israel, which remains technically at war with neighbouring Syria, advance notice of the air strikes.

Israel on Saturday lauded the joint airstrikes on Syria by the U.S., Britain and France as an "appropriate" response to the alleged gas attack in Syria.

Lt. Col. Sarit Zehavi, a former Israeli military intelligence officer and founder of the Alma Research and Education Center on Israel's Security Challenges on its Northern Borders, said Israel has invested a lot of efforts to prevent the Syria-Israeli conflict from overlapping with the internal conflict in the Arab country. Syrian government has strongly denied the allegations.

The Israeli leader added he had spoken to the British Prime Minister Theresa May following the overnight strikes that targeted three alleged chemical weapons facilities. "The attack will allow the Americans to say "we did what was needed" and leave Syria", an Israeli source said, according to a Hadashot news report.

Israel has reportedly carried out scores of military strikes in Syria against militant groups, such as Hezbollah, over their suspected transport of weapons for use in future attacks on Israel.

While Russia is being agitated by the coalition attack on Syria, Israel might be the one to pay the price.
