Red Bull were content with locking out the third row of the grid, especially as Ricciardo was within two minutes of sitting out the entirety of qualifying following an engine blow-out in Practice Three that forced his crew into a two-hour race against time which they ultimately won with just seconds to spare.

His Mercedes team have also started each of the last six Chinese Grands Prix from pole.

His teammate Verstappen had a more dramatic time of things.

Speaking after the race, Verstappen confessed that he had got it wrong.

"I was in no man's land today". I lost the rear twice, so I lost a bit of momentum in those places. It was of course my fault.

"This is definitely not what I want and it's a life lesson".

Verstappen said: "I will analyse everything and put that in my knowledge and have a better race [next time]".

No driver has ever won the season's first three races without being crowned champion that year, and the last Ferrari driver to do it was Schumacher in 2004 when he was at the peak of his powers and won the opening five.

"It's not going to be easy to beat Kimi and Sebastian tomorrow", he said.

"To have that much of a gap is a surprise", said Vettel.

Wolff also defended his driver Valtteri Bottas, after the Finn came in for criticism from some sections of the media after the Bahrain Grand Prix for lacking a "killer instinct".

He dropped out when he strove to pass Hamilton, who has already spoken of Verstappen's inexperience costing RedBull precious points.

Both Mercedes drivers struggled in cool and windy conditions during qualifying, finishing the session in third and fourth - over half a second off Sebastian Vettel's pole position time. "I left a little bit of room as well", Vettel told Sky Sports. To be honest I was expecting him to come earlier. "We were understanding the tyres, getting them to work better, but we could never achieve similar grip levels to Ferrari today". I didn't want to compromise my race.

The win for Ricciardo is made all the more remarkable by the fact he very almost missed qualifying due to a turbo issue on Saturday, and only took to the track after a swift fix job from his own mechanics and those in Verstappen's garage. He misjudged it and compromised both of our results.

"Instead the vehicle you mustn't forget that the judgements are hard to make but you have to have these things in mind and make sure you don't crash". "He could have shot his front off, get yourself a puncture or whatever".
