But the United boss has been criticised for not playing youngsters Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial on a regular basis.

The Belgian forward has started 31 of United's 32 Premier League games this season, scoring 15 times and adding seven assists, missing only the trip to his former club Everton.

That lack of game has led Wright to claim that Mourinho's style of play at United should be reason enough for them both to consider a move away.

"The answer is if you want what I call dry answers, I have dry answers and a dry answer is only 11 can start the match and we are 22 [players]". You always go to the one (who isn't playing). "Marcus Rashford is the player with the most appearances since I arrived at the club", Mourinho replied tersely. "But we always want more and we always want to show progression individually and as a team, so the numbers don't really matter as much as the results do to me".

Rashford has featured in 97 of Mourinho's 112 games since joining the club but he is concerned about his spot in England's World Cup squad. Football can not be whittled down to catchy headlines; sacrificing genuine insight in favour of shock value deprives us of being able to have a meaningful connection with the sport online. "They know that. Everybody knows, they know and they still smell a chance, but every match that is played, if they don't get points, then they are closer to relegation, but I think they still believe that mathematically it's possible". We can not have 11 players - it would be fantastic, also economically for the football clubs - to have only 11 players and play always with the same 11 and no injuries or suspensions or fatigue and nothing, it would be better for everyone but it is not possible. It would be better for everyone to have only 11 but is impossible.

"I probably have to reduce and have a squad of 12 or 13 players".

United face West Brom on Sunday before travelling to Bournemouth and it could be good opportunity for Mourinho to hand some fringe players game time.
