Previously, users of these devices had to long press the home button to access Alexa.

If you've been thinking of getting an Echo, Echo Dot, or even a new tablet, you may consider the Amazon Fire 7 or Fire HD 8. Starting today, Amazon is rolling out a new feature called Alexa Announcements which turns your multiple Echo speakers into a makeshift intercom system.

So, for example, if you're preparing dinner for the whole family, an announcement could summon everyone to the dining room.

Amazon said to use Alexa hands-free functionality on the Fire 7 and Fire HD 8 tablets across the room, users will need to plugin their tablet to a power source.

A recent report from NPR and Edison Research claims 16 percent of US adults have a smart speaker in their house.

With the SDK, Amazon says, Alexa can "control your gadget to move motors, play sounds, flash lights, or trigger other actions based on customer interactions with Alexa".

Amazon (amzn) has been steadily releasing new Alexa features meant to be used across multiple Echo devices.

Say "Alexa, announce that it's time to get up", for instance, and "It's time to get up" will be broadcast to all the other Echo devices in the household.

This update is compatible with Fire 7 and Fire 8 HD tablets running 5.6.1.0 version software and above. However, perhaps Amazon could introduce an expanded feature set like that in the future.
