California Special Mustang returns for 2019

Along with the return of the Bullitt-edition Mustang GT, inspired by the auto Steve McQueen drove in the classic film, Ford will also be offering a California Special version of the pony vehicle after a year hiatus. Earlier this year, Ford pulled the wraps off the third-generation limited-edition Mustang Bullitt at the Detroit Motor Show.

The original version, pictured below, featured a blacked-out grille, fog lamps and self-proclaimed "over-the-top" racing stripes.

Where the GT California Special differs is in its design, with six features inside and out that allow this 2019 Mustang to stand apart from the other GT models.

"When Mustang first hit the streets in 1964, owners clubs sprang up around the country, with many regional dealers creating their own personalized pony auto designs", Ford said in its news release.

The Ford Mustang GT California Special was first introduced back in 1968 and since then, Ford has offered up three modern iterations of the GT/CS, beginning in 2007, 2011 and 2016. Unique wheels round out the CS package.

Under the hood, the 2019 Mustang GT California Special returns with a 5.0-litre V8 engine that packs 451 bhp and 569NM of torque and tops out at 249kmph, mated to a 6-Speed manual with the performance package. Inside each California Special will be Miko suede-trimmed seats with GT/CS callouts and red stitching, embroidered floor mats, and special badging on the dash.

The variable valve performance exhaust offered for the V-8 now also will be offered with the 2.3-liter EcoBoost four-cylinder.

And those who want to go full retro can opt for one of the new throwback shades coming to the 2019 Mustang, like Velocity Blue or Need for Green. Moreover, for the first time, the B&O Play audio system comes to Mustang with a 10-channel amplifier producing 1,000 watts across 12 high-performance speakers.

Ford said the 2019 Mustangs will be available this summer.
