Messi announces birth of third son

La Liga leaders Barcelona allowed Lionel Messi to miss their fixture at Malaga on Saturday following the birth of his third son.

The 30-year-old later took to Instagram to announce that Ciro had been born, with the message: "Welcome Ciro!" Thanks to God everything went perfectly.

Barcelona issued Saturday morning a brief statement in which reported at the last minute excluding Messi from the match against Malaga at La Rosaleda.

Messi's wife, Antonella, is due to give birth to the couple's third child any day, with the impending new arrival mooted as the reason for the star turn's absence from professional duty. "We are super happy".

Messi has started in 26 of Barcelona's 27 league games and was expected to play tonight.

Barca are still unbeaten in the league and lead the standings with 72 points, 11 clear of Atletico Madrid who host Celta Vigo on Sunday.

Messi and Antonella, who got married last summer in their native Rosario, already had two sons, Thiago, 5, and Mateo, 2.

Barcelona now sit top of La Liga, eight points clear of closest challengers Atletico Madrid.
