"I just spoke with American President Trump", Putin told Abbas before continuing the talks behind closed doors.

Palestinian leadership sees India's friendly ties with the U.S. an added advantage since Washington, too, would welcome India playing a greater role in the region.

Other topics of mutual concern were discussed during the Putin-Trump call, including North Korea, according to the White House.

According to WAFA, Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi met with Secretary of State Rex Tillerson in Cairo on Monday, and told him the U.S. should "revive negotiations between Palestinians and Israelis".

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday said support for the Palestinian cause is a continuing thread in India's foreign policy and hoped for an early realisation of a "sovereign, independent Palestine living in a peaceful environment", reports said.

Palestinian leadership has been looking for a powerful ally who could play a leading role in the negotiations since it formally declared not to accept the United States as a mediator as Washington is "completely biased" towards Tel Aviv.

Recognizing Jerusalem as Israel's capital violated the United Nations Security Council's Resolution 478 and general charter prohibitions on the acquisition of territory by force; it also contradicted a declaration by the United States in 1991 that the final status of Jerusalem should be decided by negotiations, and that the United States doesn't recognize Israel's annexation of East Jerusalem or the extension of its municipal boundaries.

Trump also said that Israeli settlement building in the West Bank complicates peacemaking efforts - a slight backtrack on his previous assertion that settlements do not pose an obstacle to reaching a deal.

"We are going to see what goes on", Trump told the Israel Hayom daily in an interview released on Sunday.

Donald Trump has not expanded on his vision for the Israel-Palestine peace process.

Abbas is expected to meet with Putin on Monday to ask his Russian counterpart to step into this process.

The senior PA official claimed that what Trump said in the interview demonstrated "how biased the opinion of Trump and is people is in favor of Israel".

Malaysia had strongly protested the decision and voted, along with 127 other countries, at the United Nations general assembly last December in favour of a resolution rejecting US' recognition of Jerusalem as Israel's capital, but U.S. ambassador Kamala Shirin Lakhdir was quoted by Sunday Star as saying cooperation between Malaysia and the USA were "ongoing". "So we are just going to have to see what happens", Trump said, refusing to share any details on America's roadmap out of this latest mire.

Even though the United Nations has declared the Israeli settlements, now being built on Israeli-occupied Palestinian land, illegal, the expansion has continued under Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's watch.

Trump was speaking to the right-wing Israeli newspaper Yisrael Hayom after his controversial declaration in December that the U.S. recognises Jerusalem as Israel's capital and his subsequent threat to cut Palestinian aid.

Israel occupied the West Bank and East Jerusalem al-Quds during the Six-Day War in 1967. "President Trump said that the United States was standing by to assist Russian authorities in their investigation", the White House announced in a readout of the call.

Palestinians want East Jerusalem to be the capital of their future state.
