While Yoel Romero initially feared the worst regarding his injured leg following his win over Luke Rockhold at UFC 221, it now appears that the Cuban will have a short recovery.

Romero, ranked No. 1 at middleweight, was a replacement Saturday for Whittaker, who backed out of the title fight January 12 after enduring a medley of ailments. The 40-year-old missed the 185-pound weight limit by 2.7 pounds on Friday (Feb. 9), which means he was ineligible to claim a title, despite a victory.

However, this is no longer the case, as according to ESPN's Brett Okamoto, Romero will still have a chance to face Whittaker for the UFC Middleweight title as the UFC president said after the fight yesterday that Romero will fight Whittaker next despite the fact he didn't win an interim title.

Romero was in frightening form before his loss to Whittaker, winning eight in a row, including knockouts over former champions Lyoto Machida and Chris Weidman.

Romero turns 41 in April but shows no signs of slowing down and still has the ability to end any fight in a heartbeat with his brutal, fight-ending power.

Romero vs Rockhold is expected to get underway at around 5:00am BST time. Now, we could be setting up to see the former champ Rockhold reclaim his throne after losing his belt in one of the most shocking upsets in UFC history.

If Romero and Whittaker do indeed fight again, it'll be a rematch of their 2017 bout at UFC 213.

Romero - competing on a broken right leg sustained in the first round - proved he has fists of fury, as well.

Why they should fight: After a layoff of more than 14 months, Safarov finally resumed his UFC career with a bout against Tyson Pedro, but it didn't go very well for him. It was a bout for the UFC Interim Middleweight Championship, or at least it was for Rockhold.

After threatening with his signature question mark kick, Rockhold connected with another thunderous leg kick to Romero's lead leg before darting away from an overhand left. As Romero so often does, he came to life in the second round. Meanwhile, Rockhold will be looking to wear Romero out and finish this one in impressive fashion.

Had Romero made weight, I would have likely leaned toward him.
