Southampton are in deep trouble now as they currently sit in 18th-place, while Liverpool have moved back into third.

However, the visitors were able to coast through the final stages with Firmino and Salah even replaced in flawless preparation for their return to Champions League action at Porto in the first leg of their last 16 tie on Wednesday. The midfielder curled a fine ball over the top of Liverpool's defence and to Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, who at the back post hesitated, allowing Karius to spread himself and then comfortably save the shot he eventually produced.

Attack wise, there is no comparison with Liverpool so far scoring three times more goals than their hosts, 59 as compared to the Saints' 20 goals.

Another former Southampton player nearly inspired Liverpool to a third goal midway through the second half.

Karius was called into action again in the 29th minute, denying both Guido Carrillo and James Ward-Prowse.

While Southampton did not manage to score in the 25 minutes following the goal, there were clearly positive signs for the Saints as they went in search of a much-needed equaliser. Obviously, after the second goal, it was really tough for us to come back and, little by little, our confidence in the game was really down'.

Liverpool picked up where they left off after the break, as they controlled possession and were only prevented more goals by last-ditch defending from Southampton. The Tottenham striker has recorded 23 goals this term.
