Kansas projected to be No. 2 seed by NCAA Tournament selection committee

Xavier was the third No. 1 seed (Midwest Region) and Purdue, which lost twice this week, was the fourth No. 1 seed (West Region). The top 16 bracket reveal showed the selection committee is stressing the number of quality wins above everything else, including the actual "quality" of so-called quality wins, with the new Quadrant system.

East: 1. Villanova, 2.

This is the second straight year the selection committee has released a preview of the bracket. The committee placed the Spartans in the South Region, where Virginia and Cincinnati are the top two teams. The top four teams are a combined 40-8 away from home this season.

The Sooners are losers of three in a row, but have notable wins over Oregon, Wichita State, Texas Tech and Kansas.

Michigan State - which now holds an overall record of 24-3 and has gone 12-2 in Big Ten play - was not ranked a No. 1 or No. 2 seed. If those seeds held, Xavier would get preference for the Midwest Region in Omaha because it is the higher seed. The 22-3 start by Auburn is the second-best start through 25 games in program history, only trailing the 1998-99 Tigers, who started 24-1. "If we did not switch Kansas and Cincinnati, those regions would be unbalanced". Auburn's only losses this season have come against teams rated 17th (Texas A&M), 33rd (Alabama) and 39th in the RPI (Temple).

The other Big Ten teams to make the cut were Purdue (No. 1 seed for the West Region) and Ohio State (No. 4 seed for the East Region).

Virginia may not be the No. 1 team in the nation when the Associated Press poll is released on Monday, but the Cavaliers are No. 1 where it counts.
