Motorists are urged to slow down as freezing rain hits the Toronto area.

"More freezing rain is forecast with the low later this afternoon and this evening", a statement read Sunday morning.

Environment Canada said the periods of ice pellets and freezing rain moved into southwestern Ontario and would move eastward reach the Golden Horseshoe near noon.

"This could be several hours of freezing rain with untreated walkways and surfaces".

Freezing rain warnings are issued when rain falling in sub-zero temperatures creates ice build-up and icy surfaces.

Roads, sidewalks, bridges and parking lots may become slippery.

It's expected the rain will change to flurries later Sunday afternoon or evening.

The agency warns that driving conditions could be hazardous and the weather conditions could contribute to transportation delays. "Watch for tail lights ahead and maintain a safe following distance".
