A look at notable quotes from the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics

Snowboarders Max Parrot and Mark McMorris claimed Canada's first medals of the 2018 Winter Olympics Saturday night in the men's slopestyle event in Pyeongchang.

The two Canadians finished behind 17-year-old American Redmond Gerard, who gave the USA its first gold of 2018 with a score of 87.16.

Parrot earned silver in the men's snowboard slopestyle while McMorris won bronze. And with the pressure off for their second runs, both nailed huge scores - McMorris with an 86.83 and Parrot just eclipsing him at 87.31 - to set a standard before the medal runs.

Along with all Canadians, I am extremely proud of Max and Mark's outstanding performances. He could have tried to execute a series of much more hard tricks, but elected to be a little bit more cautious and put together a run that gave him a score of 85.2 points.

In March, McMorris was riding in the backcountry near Whistler, British Columbia, when he went off a jump and crashed into a tree, resulting in a broken jaw, broken left arm, ruptured spleen, a pelvic fracture, rib fractures and a collapsed lung.

According to CBC, McMorris was knocked unconscious from the fall and had to be airlifted to Vancouver for emergency surgery to control his bleeding and also fix the breaks to his jaw and arm.

Gerard left it all until the final run, having bailed out of his first two attempts, and entered the final round in 10 placing in the 11-man final.

McMorris wins his second straight bronze medal in this event.

"Very much so, it is really cool that I can snowboard again", he said.

McMorris, who could have another chapter in his story when he goes in the big air competition in Pyeongchang, added: "I've been really stuck in the contest scene for a while, or on a death bed, so I'm pretty stoked".

McMorris won bronze four years ago at the Sochi Games when slopestyle made its Olympic debut.
