The military has boosted its operations on the border with Libya and repeatedly expressed concern about militants crossing from the chaos-wracked country to launch attacks.

The military operation is meant to cover large parts of the Sinai peninsula, as well as parts of the Delta and the Western Desert, the military spokesman said.

The armed forces targeted hotbeds and huts used by terrorists as bases to launch attacks against security forces in central and North Sinai on Friday, as part of a comprehensive operation in the region, armed forces spokesperson Tamer al-Refaei announced.

Warplanes will bomb areas where militants are hiding while troops, tanks and armoured vehicles will be deployed on the ground, security sources said.

"The law enforcement forces began this morning implementing the comprehensive confrontation against the terrorist and criminal elements and organizations in northern and central Sinai", an army spokesman said in a televised statement.

"Hasm is one of armed wing of the Brotherhood group assigned with carrying out operations against the country's vital premises and facilities as well as the armed forces and the police ahead of the presidential elections", said the police statement.

Most of the attacks in the Sinai Peninsula in recent years have been claimed by the Sinai Province, Egypt's ISIS affiliate.

Egypt regularly targets militants with air strikes and arrest raids in Sinai.

The Sinai Peninsula had always been demilitarised under the terms of the 1979 peace treaty between Egypt and Israel, but as the violence intensified the government responded by ramping up its military presence, with the tacit approval of Israel.

On Palm Sunday in April 2017, suicide bombings targeting St. George's Church in Tanta and St. Mark's Cathedral in Alexandria killed at least 45 people. Ahram Online provided an account of key events and statements by the army, police and public institutions throughout the day.

"Units from the naval forces are also tightening the security on the sea front, with the aim of cutting all supply lines to terrorist elements".

In 2014, Sinai's indigenous terrorists pledged their allegiance to ISIL terrorist group.

President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi gave the armed forces three months to end "terrorism" after militants killed more than 350 people at a mosque in North Sinai in November.
