Skype adds Private Conversations with end-to-end encryption

The key difference between the new feature and its typical chats is that users must specifically accept invitations to private conversations. Skype users will be able to have end-to-end encrypted Skype audio calls and text conversations, including the ability to upload multimedia files, using the Signal Protocol developed by Open Whisper Systems.

Signal is an open source project now found in WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger and Google Allo.

Microsoft has begun rolling out a new feature which allows end-to-end encryption in Skype conversations which is dubbed as "Private Conversation". They can only send emoticons, files, and audio messages from the chat window. Private Conversations according to Microsoft, are only available now to Skype Insiders using Skype version for iOS, Android, Linux, Mac, and Windows Desktop. Private Conversations can only be between you and one other contact. Restarting a Private Conversation with the same contact will recover the previous messages. End-to-end crypto ensures only each end of the conversation - the people talking to each other - can decipher messages.

Despite its 300 million monthly active users and its large "prosumer" base, Skype remains one of the few modern messaging apps that doesn't encrypt your communications. In order to use the feature, a user has to select the "New Private Conversation" option from the compose menu or from the recipient's profile.

We're looking to you, Skype Insiders, to tell us if this new feature works as expected before enabling it for everyone.

Bear in mind that only a single device can be used with each conversation, the post said.

End-to-end encryption is the need of the hour as security flaws in otherwise secure systems get exposed on a regular basis. This is not supported in groups. A lock icon will appear next to a contact's name to show that a conversation is encrypted.

Private Conversations are specific to a device.

Private Conversations are available in preview for Skype Insiders only. Having to do this every time on Skype would be more of headache than feature.
