Pirates Trade Pitcher Gerrit Cole To Houston Astros

Earlier this offseason the Yankees were said to be pushing to acquire Gerrit Cole from the Pirates.

If the Yankees really want Gerrit Cole, it may not be too late: The Astros GM said that a deal for the Pirates righthander isn't "imminent", despite previous reports saying one was almost done.

The Yankees had been in trade talks with the Pirates about Cole for several weeks. Morosi added Cole's salary arbitration has yet to be resolved with a filing deadline of Friday, and that the Astros wanted to finalize a trade so "they can file at their number" rather than take on the Pirates' salary number.

If the trade does goes through, the trade would bolster an already-stacked rotation in Houston that includes two-time Cy Young award-winner Justin Verlander and 2015 victor Dallas Keuchel.

Pittsburgh selected Cole with the first overall pick in the 2011 draft. He was 12-12 with a 4.26 ERA and 196 strikeouts in 203.0 inning pitched in 2017. The former All-Star's best season came back in 2015 when he posted a 19-8 record with a 2.60 ERA en route to finishing in the top five in Cy Young voting.

The Yankees' rotation now includes Luis Severino, Masahiro Tanaka, Sonny Gray and CC Sabathia.
