Terrorist, civilian killed in south Kashmir

A militant was killed in an encounter with security forces in the woods of Kokernag in south Kashmir district of Anantnag on Tuesday.

Reports said government forces cordoned off the area and conducted searches following specific intelligence inputs suggesting presence of militants.

"As the security forces closed in on the hiding terrorists whose number was estimated to be around five, they were fired triggering an encounter", said the police official.

According to police, the identity of slain militant and their group affiliation was being ascertained.

"The victims were identified as Muhammad Furhan and Muhammad Farham, both local militants".

One civilian has succumbed to injuries during the clashes in Khudwani village of district Kulgam.

He was also involved in many anti-national and unlawful activities, the spokesperson said. In north Kashmir's Baramulla district, two militants and nine Over Ground Workers (OGWs) were arrested, said a Jammu and Kashmir police spokesperson.

Hailing from Wangund, Kaimuh village, Farhan had joined Hizbul on June 13 previous year. The officials said that the Army opened fire when one of its camps in the area came under attack by a stone-pelting mob.

The other injured, Yasir Ahmed Dar, 30, who was hit in the shoulder, is stated to be stable.
