This Bloomberg Profile looks into how Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos grew his business after builting it inside his garage.

Bezos is the largest shareholder of Amazon, the world's biggest online retailer.

When Amazon stock climbed 1.4 per cent Monday, it added approximately $1.4 billion to Bezos' net worth. Bezos is also the owner of the Washington Post and Blue Origin, a private space travel company.

Gates' previous record of richest person ever was set in April 1999, when he passed the $100 billion mark during the internet stock bubble.

The Microsoft founder is now worth $91.9 billion according to Forbes, and $93.3 billion according to Bloomberg, enough for No. 2 on both lists. Adjusted for inflation, that would be $148 billion today.

Gates net worth would have been far more if he had not given out nearly 700 million shares of Microsoft, worth $61.8 billion at today's value, as well as $2.9 billion in cash to charity since 1996.

Still, of those individuals whose wealth is publicly traceable, Bezos is the richest person alive.

In August, Gates donated almost $US6 billion worth of the software maker's shares, his largest gift since the turn of the century.
