Move over Cortana, Amazon Alexa is coming to Windows 10

This deal is apparently unrelated to the partnership Amazon struck with Microsoft a year ago, which would let Alexa and Microsoft's Cortana voice assistant "talk to each other" on Windows 10 PCs. The company is partnering with some of the biggest Windows device makers, including the likes of Lenovo, HP, Asus, and Acer, to bring Alexa to new Windows 10 devices this year.

Amazon has started to integrate its Alexa assistant to desktops by an app designed for Windows.

Instead of just saying "Hey Cortana, open Alexa", to launch the service on a different product, the new idea appears to be total Alexa functionality built into Windows. These laptops are the Aspire 5, Aspire 7, Spin 3, Spin 5, Switch 7 Black Edition, Swift 3, Swift 5, Swift 7, Aspire Z24, Aspire U27, and Aspire S24.

Amazon, the e-commerce giant, is taking Alexa beyond its Echo and Fire devices. There is Intel Smart Sound Technology, which is an integrated audio DSP (Digital Signal Processor) to handle audio, voice, and speech interactions. "We're delighted that ASUS will bring the Alexa experience to its laptop models - providing hands-free voice capabilities, and tens of thousands of skills, to PC customers at their desks and on-the-go". Alexa making its way onto machines made by these brands could win it some favor among professionals, and the integration of Alexa for Business could help further its business appeal by helping with meetings, calendar management, and more. Alexa's reach isn't necessarily a problem for Amazon, but the company doesn't have the hardware platform advantages that Google does, as Google's Assistant is available to millions of Android users already. HP is launching a sleek desktop PC called Pavillion Wave which will come with Amazon Alexa integration. It may have decided it would rather consumers interact with Alexa directly, instead of accessing the assistant via Cortana.

It's early January and that means tons of CES announcements. According to the details then provided, Alexa and Cortana will be able to integrate with each other across their respective ecosystems.
