At the close of trading Friday, West Texas Intermediate crude oil settled at $61.44 per barrel, $1.02 higher than the previous week.

AAA's January 8 survey of prices in MA finds self-serve, regular unleaded averaging $2.48 per gallon.

According to AAA, the first part of a new year is traditionally strong for oil prices.

AAA Northeast said gas prices are up two cents in Rhode Island and up five cents in MA.

The projected drop would help bring prices back down to where they were at the end of 2017.

AAA Northeast is a not-for-profit auto club with 62 offices in Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Connecticut, New Jersey, New Hampshire and NY, providing more than 5.2 million local AAA members with travel, insurance, finance, and auto-related services.

In Rhode Island, gas is four cents above the national average of $2.49, while gas prices are a penny less than the national average in MA. "Unfortunately, springtime is a springboard for prices at the pump, and we may see a 40- to 50-cent jump by the summer".

The local average is below last week's statewide average of $2.45, according to AAA, and the Sarasota-Bradenton region has among the lowest average prices in the state, according to AAA.
