Tamil Nadu bus strike: 10 key points

Earlier on the second day of the strike, the head of the Centre of Indian Trade Union, Soundararjan, had said, "We don't want to subject the public to hardship but the government is pushing us".

As the strike entered the second day on Friday crippling operation of the eight transport corporation running about 21,000 buses, the first bench of the High Court headed by Chief Justice Indira Banerjee ordered the workers to resume work or face the effect including termination and contempt of court.

The commuters in the state have been forced to depend on autos and the rental cab services, specifically on Ola, which has had a drastic hike in the fares.

In several districts, a majority of the buses stayed off roads prompting the transport department authorities to operate them with temporary drivers and conductors.

On January 5, the Madras High Court had issued an interim order restraining employees from striking work.

CITU leader A Soundarrajan said he felt the court had not heard their side and that the unions will put forth their views on Monday before the bench.

"The striking workers should go back to work or face consequences, including termination and contempt of court", it said during the hearing of a PIL seeking a direction to the state government to end the strike by holding talks. "We have to go ask the bus drivers every time", Kanagavel, a passenger at Chennai Mofussil Bus Terminus here said. The trade unions demand a 2.57 percent hike while the government insisted on 2.44 percent hike. "They have no money to prove a reasonable hike to transport workers", he said.

As many as 17 trade unions had launched an indefinite stir since Thursday night, with scores of Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation (TNSTC) staff joining the protest. "It is the highest increase in the wages compared to the previous settlements".

Yesterday, state transport minister M R Vijayabaskar had urged workers to resume work by Sunday, else they would be faced with departmental action. So we demanded at least to provide a hike of 2.57 times on par with other government departments.
