Five powerlifters, including world champion Saksham Yadav, killed in vehicle accident

Four national-level power-lifters were killed and two others, including a world champion, were seriously injured when the auto that they were travelling met with an accident near the Delhi-Haryana border on Sunday, police said.

The victims were in a Swift DZire and were driving along the Delhi-Panipat National Highway when the accident occurred at about 4 am in the vicinity of Alipur village, which lies close to the Singhu border that divides Delhi and Haryana. Saksham was travelling with four other powerlifters who died on spot.

Yadav, a resident of Nagloi in north Delhi, won gold for India in powerlifting world championship held in Moscow previous year.

These two were rushed to Max Hospital in Delhi's Shalimar Bagh. The auto was moving at a high speed and the accident took place after the driver lost control of the vehicle. Yadav was later shifted to the trauma centre of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, where his condition was said to be "extremely critical".

Police said the players who died in the accident have been identified by their first names as Harish, Tikamchand and Suraj, while the fourth person's identity is not known yet. The athlete had sustained grievous head injuries and severe internal bleeding. "We immediately rushed to the spot and found that one Maruti Swift DZire vehicle bearing number DL 4 CAU 9585 met with an accident near Petrol Pump, while going towards Haryana's Karnal when they were celebrating Rohit's birthday", Gupta told The Indian Express. Due to the impact of the crash, the car's roof was shattered.
