Husband Arrested After Crying Baby Leads Police To Dead Mother

Less than two hours later, different officers responded to the same home and found Wells dead at the base of a stairwell, authorities said.

Barry Wells appeared stone-faced as he was walked out of the back of the 77th Precinct wearing a blue sweatshirt with the hood over his head.

WABC reported that part of the investigation is looking into whether the 911 dispatcher who took the call gave the responding officers complete information about the initial report.

It was Wells' sister that called police, telling them that Tonie was "scared" of her husband, 29-year old Barry Wells, the sources said.

Chopper 4 over the scene Wednesday showed a heavy emergency presence after Wells' body was found, with at least four marked police cars and a number of unmarked police cars in the area, which was roped off with yellow tape. Wells' daughter was not hurt, but it's unclear how long Wells' body was inside the house with the child.

Neighbors reportedly called police on Wednesday after they heard cries from the couple's toddler and the sound of someone or something falling down the stairs, a police source told the New York Post.

The woman was 22-year-old Tonie Wells.

"Wells" neighbor, Michelle Ruiz, 22, who last saw Wells three weeks ago, said Wells was pregnant.

On Thursday, police said Wells' husband was a person of interest, and was in custody and being questioned. "It was definitely him, ' the woman said referring to Wells" husband.

"An initial determination deemed this person's death to be suspicious and it is now being investigated", said deputy chief Michael Kempfer, according to CBS News. The Medical Examiner's Office will make a final determination as to the cause of death.
