Just after the cost of water has been hiked by the Delhi Jal Board on December 26, east Delhi Mayor staged a protest against Chief Minister Kejriwal for the decision.

Delhi Congress and Delhi BJP on Tuesday condemned the AAP Government's decision to increase the water charges by 20 per cent for those consuming more than 20,000 litres of water per month.

The proposal was made by the Delhi Jal Board as a measure tackle its loss which is now at 516 crore.

The service charge for this slab is Rs 219.62. "Above 20,000 litres, a 20% combined hike on water & sewer charges approved in Delhi Jal Board meeting".

Delhi government spokesperson, Nagendar Sharma tweeted, "Residents that consume less than 20,000 litres a month will continue to pay no charges".

In its election manifesto, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) had promised free water and cheaper electricity. Those who use more than 30,000 litres a month pay Rs 36.61 per 1,000 litres apart from a service charge of Rs 292.82. The AAP government, however, claimed that this hike will not be for households consuming less than that. "This hike is for the year 2018 - only hike in the past three years (2016, 2017 and 2018)", he noted.

"Similarly, for consumption of 25,000 litres of water, the bill now will be Rs 599.14, instead of Rs 535.86 earlier", he explained.
