Alfa Romeo Sauber confirms Leclerc and Ericsson

Charles Leclerc will make his Formula 1 debut next season after being confirmed alongside Marcus Ericsson in Sauber's line-up.

He'll have a new partner for the season, with Formula 2 champion Charles Leclerc stepping up to make his F1 race début in Melbourne.

Leclerc has been testing for Sauber on numerous occasions this season, including four FP1 runs toward the end of the year.

Leclerc has risen rapidly through the single-seater ranks, winning the GP3 title past year before his F1 championship triumph this season.

It's believed that Ferrari had been pressing for another of their development drivers, Antonio Giovinazzi, to take the race seat. The 27-year-old Swede has scored nine points with the Swiss team in that time. While Sauber is not a competitive team and Leclerc will likely struggle to score points by finishing races in the top 10, this will be a great opportunity for him to showcase his driving talent to some of the sport's top teams.

Ferrari's late founder Enzo also started out racing and managing a team for Alfa Romeo, before setting up on his own in the late 1930s.

While the 2018 Formula 1 driver market has been nowhere near as volatile as expected given the extensions for Kimi Raikkonen, Fernando Alonso and Sebastian Vettel, some questions were left unanswered following the final race of the season in Abu Dhabi last Sunday.
