It was speculated that Garoppolo would win the starting job as soon as he landed in San Francisco after a shocking trade sent him from the company of Bill Belichick and Tom Brady all the way across the country to play for the 49ers.

Jimmy Garoppolo is set to make his first start for the San Francisco 49ers this Sunday against the Chicago Bears.

Only adding to the intrigue of Garoppolo's first start in a 49ers uniform is the fact that it will take place in his hometown.

Defensive coordinator Vic Fangio and this Bears defense will have their hands full with a new, relatively unknown threat on Sunday. He owns a 2-0 record with 496 combined passing yards, no picks and a quarterback rating of 119.0 in his two starts for the New England Patriots.

Beathard was injured in Sunday's game against the Seattle Seahawks, which pressed Garoppolo into brief duty.

It is unclear how much C.J. Beathard's knee injury sustained at the end of the Seahawks game is playing into this, but head coach Kyle Shanahan said on Monday that the rookie's injury wasn't serious. He replaced Beathard for the final 1:07, ran for a 4-yard scramble on his first snap, converted a fourth-down pass to Aldrick Robinson (8 yards) before rolling left for a 10-yard touchdown strike to Louis Murphy.

In 18 career games, Garoppolo has completed 67.7 percent of his passes for 708 yards, throwing six touchdown passes and no interceptions.
