"The EU stands ready to accompany this process in cooperation with the African Union and SADC, and to assist the Zimbabwean people with all instruments at its disposal in order to meet that objective", Mogherini said in a statement.

Speaker of the Parliament of Zimbabwe, Jacob Mudenda announced Mr Mugabe's resignation on Tuesday, November 21.

The African National Congress (ANC) has given its first reaction to Robert Mugabe' s resignation as Zimbabwe's president, saying the 93-year-old former leader must be celebrated for his role over the last decade. Presidents of Angola and South Africa cancelled a trip to Harare after Mugabe agreed to step down following pressure from the army, his party and ordinary Zimbabweans who flooded the streets.

That was after Zanu PF had booted as its leader on Sunday.

"President Mugabe condoned human rights violations, defended criminal actions of his officials and allowed a culture of impunity for grotesque crimes to thrive".

With Mr Mnangagwa - a former ally of Mr Mugabe nicknamed the Crocodile - the likely next leader, Mr Johnson said: "I think it's very important at the moment that we don't focus too much on the personalities, let's concentrate on the potential, the hope for Zimbabwe - an incredible country, a lovely country blessed with extraordinary physical and human potential".

On the fate of Mr Mugabe and his wife, the Foreign Secretary said: "That is a decision for the people of Zimbabwe".

Van Nieuwkerk said worldwide human rights activists would come hard after Mugabe, 93, and force him to stand trial for the crimes he committed in the 1980s when over 20 000 Zimbabweans were killed in the Gukurahundi massacres in Matabeleland and parts of Midlands provinces.

However, Mugabe and his family own several properties in South Africa and the couple's two sons, Robert Jnr and Chatunga live there.
