"What I've done this year, especially on the European Tour from no member, nothing, to an affiliate to European Tour champion to actually be Rolex Series champion and to now twice Rolex Series champion and victor of the DP World Tour Championship, it's something unbelievable", said Rahm, who ended the season as European No. 3 behind Tommy Fleetwood and Justin Rose.

It was Rahm's second European Tour victory, coming after July's win at the Dubai Duty Free Irish Open.

He was also named the European Tour's Rookie of the Year prior to this performance, eventually moving up to No. 4 in the Official World Golf Ranking as well thanks to the season-ending win.

I've always been a big Justin Rose fan and, for me, he is the man who can inspire his European team-mates to get back to winning ways in the Ryder Cup in France next September.

Asked if he will play more events, the Arizona State graduate added: "I'll try. It's a very big thing to achieve".

"I didn't plan on being here at the beginning of the year and I sure didn't plan on winning it so it's an incredible feeling".

Rahm's challenge will be trying to play both the European and PGA tours next season. It's a great week for me mentally in that sense and, hopefully, it reinforces my position to maybe be considered for the Ryder Cup next year. "I have success in Europe and I want to keep coming, have lots of fun and hopefully keep playing good golf". "Off the course I'm just such a happy person so we'll have to think of ways to better this one".

Others took advantage of helpful conditions and 15 players are within five shots of the lead, including Sergio Garcia, who is 10 under par and could still win the Race to Dubai if he wins the tournament and his rivals falter. This is a different pressure to Wentworth previous year (the BMW PGA Championship) when I didn't want to play because I was scared I would not get it off the first tee.

"I'll always have 2017 Race to Dubai Number One". He's hoping to play more than that. At the end of day three we still don't know who is going to prevail. "I just hoped I was going to have my chances, and that's what happened".
