Many fans were disappointed in the beta, and many reviewers took issue with the game's progression system, which seemed overly-dependent on purchasing in-game currency with real money.

This situation is quite the turnaround considering that Battlefront 1 had the honor of being the biggest ever launch for a Star Wars title when it debuted in the United Kingdom in 2015.

An announcement from Oskar Gabrielson, general manager at DICE, developer studio behind the game informed players that the new Battlefront title won't launch with microtransactions, but this doesn't mean they are out permanently.

Right now, gamers can only progress within Battlefront II with gameplay rather than through microtransactions, but the restoration of a tweaked model is expected imminently.

It has to be noted that since gamers are increasingly moving to online distribution, backed up by EA's own data which showed that around 36% of its global sales were digital, it still won't cover the shortfall presented with the physical sales of Star Wars: Battlefront II.

In his 6/10 review, our own Brett Phipps wrote: "Star Wars Battlefront 2 is a great game spoiled by a awful business model". This business model needs to change, because no rational human being should be spending a quarter of the price of a PlayStation 4 to play a single game and then still need to do more to enjoy it to its fullest potential. We've heard the concerns about potentially giving players unfair advantages. "We will now spend more time listening, adjusting, balancing, and tuning". And we've heard that this is overshadowing an otherwise great game. "We'll share more details as we work through this".

The Washington Post reports that Jimmy Pitaro, the chairman of Disney's consumer products and interactive media division, voiced concerns to EA about Battlefront's in-game transactions hours prior to EA's decision to pull them.
