New worldwide students enrolled in U.S. colleges decline

New worldwide students enrolled in U.S. colleges decline

This is the first time that the number of new worldwide students dropped in the 12 years since IIE started reporting about enrollments, based on the official statistics provided by the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, U.S. Department of State.

"The Office of Study Abroad is thrilled with St. Thomas' highest ranking ever in the doctoral category, and keeping excellent company with other national Catholic universities", said Sarah Spencer, director of study abroad. "Much of the increase reported for the past couple of years can be attributed to more students pursuing OPT related to their academic fields after their degree studies in the US".

The university ranks No. 1 among public institutions in the numbers of students going overseas for semester-long study, and ranks No. 14 among all universities and colleges for studying in foreign lands, according to the Open Doors Report, released on Monday as part of International Education Week. The top host destinations for USA students studying overseas in 2015/16 were the United Kingdom, Italy, Spain, France, and Germany.

The report shows Purdue has almost 11,300 worldwide students who make up about 22 percent of the school's total enrollment.

Total global enrollment across the country grew by 3.4 percent to 1,078,822 students, while the number of new worldwide students enrolling for the first time in US institutions fell by 3.3 percent (from 300,743 new students in 2015-16 to 290,836 in 2016-17).

Global students coming to UW-Madison continued to grow, with 6,769 students on campus in the 2016-17 school year, up more than five percent from the previous year.
