"We will simply not enable a Shiite and Iranian presence in Syria, and will not allow all of Syria to become a forward operating base against the state of Israel".

The agreement was re-affirmed in the joint Trump-Putin announcement when they met in Vietnam over the weekend.

Speaking to a special session of the Knesset on Monday, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declared that Iran knows Israel will "not accept" its permanent presence in Syria, adding "I have clarified to our friends in Washington and our friends in Moscow that we will operate in Syria, including southern Syria, in accordance with our understanding and in accordance with our security needs". This includes the expansion of a truce in the southwestern Syrian region which borders Israel and Jordan. "Anyone who has yet to understand that is advised to do so", the country's Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman said, as quoted by his press service. Israel has "set red lines and will stand firm on this", he said Sunday. The global community has not recognized Israel's annexation of the Golan Heights.

A US State Department official has said Russian Federation had agreed " to work with the Syrian regime to remove Iranian-backed forces a defined distance" from the Golan Heights frontier with Israel, which captured the plateau in the 1967 Middle East war.

The letter came a day after American officials said that U.S. has been arming Iranian-linked militia and anti-Daesh envoy appointed during former U.S. President Barack Obama's tenure, Brett McGurk played a significant role in it.

Israel has reservations that not enough is being done to tackle Iran's presence in southern Syria.

Israel media published on Monday that IDF Chief of Staff Gadi Eizenkot traveled secretly to Brussels and convened with US General Curtis Scaparrotti to discuss Iranian acts in the Middle East, generally, and Syria, specifically. Those have targeted suspected Hezbollah or Iranian arms depots, or have been in retaliation for shelling from the Syrian-held Golan Heights.
