Cavaliers earn 11-seed in 39th straight NCAA Tournament appearance

After winning their conference championships over the weekend, William and Mary and Old Dominion were awarded first-round home games in the NCAA men's soccer tournament when the pairings were announced Monday. Having received a first round bye, the Tigers will play the victor of Mercer and Coastal Carolina in the second round on Sunday, Nov. 19 at Historic Riggs Field.

WVU, last season's national runner-up, had made the NCAA second round for the third straight season and the 12th time in program history. NC State and Virginia Tech also earned NCAA Championship bids for the ACC.

Other ACC members in the top 16, all receiving first-round byes, are No. 3 North Carolina, No. 6 Duke, No. 8 Clemson, No.11 Virginia and No. 12 Notre Dame. Senior Mohamed Thiaw leads the way with eight goals, while junior Tate Schmitt has seven and senior Tim Kubel has six.

The Irish are 18-17-2 (.514) all-time in NCAA Championship play, which includes a 17-13-2 record under Clark. The Irish are a combined 4-5-2 (.455) against fellow NCAA Championship competitors this season, including a 2-0-2 mark in matches played at Alumni Stadium.

The 2017 NCAA Men's Soccer Championship Selection took place November 13 and it featured the Mid-American Conference champions, The University of Akron Men's Soccer team. The Cardinals have no previous meetings against USF.
