He also took home the best song prize for There's Nothing Holding Me Back and the best fans award as the EMA's returned to London for the first time in 21 years.

Rita Ora shocked everyone withh her astonishing appearance dressed wit a dressing gown and a towel at MTV Music Awards 2017.

Eminem opened the ceremony with his new song "Walk on Water", featuring Beyonce, though Skylar Grey filled on vocals for the live performance. During the performance, the stage behind and beneath her was covered in the colours of the rainbow.

Mendes also won the Biggest Fans award earlier in the evening, and is still up for Best Artist - against Ariana Grande, Ed Sheeran, Kendrick Lamar, Miley Cyrus and Taylor Swift.

Mendes performed "There's Nothing Holdin' Me Back", the victor of "Best Song".

The band played a concert at an MTV event in London's Trafalgar Square the previous evening, footage of which was shown in lieu of a performance. Other highlights included Travis Scott rapping "Butterfly Effect" on top of an animatronic bird, United Kingdom hip-hop star Stormzy's "Big for Your Boots", and a new U2 song - "Get Out Of Your Own Way" - performed by Bono and company from Trafalgar Square.

Security was tight at the event, with airport-style scanners at entrances, following a series of attacks that have hit the United Kingdom this year, including a suicide bomb attack at an Arianna Grande concert in Manchester in May, which left 22 people dead.
