Addressing the media, the police said that rescue operations were on by the Vijayawada City Police and the National Disaster Rescue Force.

Home Minister N. Chinnarajappa, who rushed to the site, said 16 bodies had been recovered while the search was on for the missing.

The private boat was travelling from Bhavani Island to Pavitra Sangamam at the time of the incident.

Chief minister N Chandrababu Naidu expressed shock over the incident and directed the authorities to intensify rescue operations.

Director general of police N Sambasiva Rao, Krishna district collector Lakshmi Kantham and the other senior officials of the district administration are personally supervising the rescue operations.
