Senegal secure World Cup spot with win over South Africa

Mkhize's own goal preceded a second half to forget, as more questions were asked in another disappointing campaign that has led to having to wait for the 2022 World Cup qualifications.

The only previous World Cup appearance by Senegal was in 2002 when current coach Aliou Cisse captained a team that reached the quarter-finals in South Korea and Japan.

South Africa have to nullify the threat of Sadio Mane on the attack and get past the giant Senegal centreback Kalidou Koulibaly, who is rated among the best in the top European leagues and has a hefty price tag on his head.

South Africa defeated Senegal 2-1 in Polokwane last November, but Federation Internationale de Football Association ordered a replay because of "match manipulation" by Ghanaian referee Joseph Lamptey, who was banned for life. But the decision to replay a game because of fixing caused serious discontent among the three other teams competing against Senegal for a World Cup place.

"We are going to represent all of Africa in Russian Federation next year and will do our best to make everyone proud".

The result ensured an unassailable 11 points for Senegal after five games, helping them qualify for their second World Cup finals, their first since Korea/Japan 2002.

He laid on a superb, defence-splitting pass for West Ham striker Diafra Sakho to slot past Bafana Bafana goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune, giving Senegal the flawless start after 12 minutes.

Bafana Bafana were desperately unlucky not to be on level terms before that setback as Lebogang Manyama struck the crossbar from close range while Percy Tau was unable to poke home the rebound that fell into his path after Senegal goalkeeper Khadim Ndiaye saved a Themba Zwane effort. Sadio Mané set up Diafra Sakho for a lovely first goal, and Mané was involved in the second as well.

And when defender Thamsanqa Mkhize helped the ball into his own net just after 38 minutes of play, it couldn't have gotten worse.
