Summary: Stalin on Thursday said there was no point commenting on the searches conducted by the Income Tax Department on the premises owned by V.K. Sasikala and her family members when the fate of other similar exercises carried out against prominent persons in Tamil Nadu in the recent past was not known.

An I-T department official, who did not want to be named said, "We searched premises of some others linked to Dhinakaran and his jailed aunt VK Sasikala". Raids took place simultaneously at 187 locations in Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Delhi and Bengaluru. The official added that the extensive search operation was based on reliable information on 10 groups who were own shell companies and made large cash deposits during demonetization.

Brushing aside the TTV charge that the tax raids were political vendetta and inspired by ulterior motives, BJP state president Dr Tamilisai Sounderarajan said the taxmen were merely carrying out their duty.

Meanwhile, BJP leader Subramanian Swamy too tried to wade into the controversy nearly claiming as if the raids were a reaction to his complaints against Sasikala made in a court but at the same time also lamenting why similar action was not being taken against Karunanidhi and his daughter, 2G scam accused M Kanimozhi.

Late chief minister J. Jayalalithaa's personal secretary Poongundran's home was also serached.

"One can not be deceiving oneself to say that the Income Tax department is functioning independently when searches are going on simultaneously at 150 places", he told reporters outside his house in Adyar, Chennai. It is perceived to be favourably politically disposed towards Sasikala and Dhinakaran.

The operation was kept secret, so much so that the raiding tax officials hired private cabs and had pasted wedding stickers on the windscreens of vehicles involved in the operation so as not to arouse suspicion. "Even if I was arrested and jailed for 20 years, I will come out at 75 and continue to serve the people through politics", he declared.

Now, the EPS-OPS faction and the TTV Dhinakaran faction are locked in a battle to claim the iconic "two-leaves" symbol of the AIADMK.
