Lonzo Ball: No word from LiAngelo amid situation in China

When reporters asked LaVar Ball about the situation on Tuesday, the outspoken father of Lonzo, LiAngelo and LaMelo told ESPN that LiAngelo will "be fine" and that the incident "ain't that big a deal".

Chinese foreign ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying said on Wednesday the Chinese government had reported the case to the US side in accordance with consular agreements.

From left to right, UCLA basketball players Jalen Hill, LiAngelo Ball and Cody Riley are seen in photos provided by the university. Additionally, William Nee, a researcher for Amnesty International, told Wetzel that suspects in China are regularly detained for a month or more before being indicted.

A UCLA spokesman did not confirm or deny the information, referring to the school's statement that it was cooperating with local authorities.

Chinese authorities are investigating three Americans following media reports that three UCLA freshmen were arrested for shoplifting ahead of their basketball game against Georgia Tech in Shanghai.

"We are aware of a situation involving UCLA student-athletes in Hangzhou, China", UCLA Athletics said in a statement.

Pac-12 Commissioner Larry Scott, meanwhile, said the conference is "very disappointed" by any actions that would detract from a positive cross-cultural experience. "Whether in the United States or overseas, we expect our student-athletes to uphold the highest standards".

That latter news ironically came a day before President Trump's Thursday visit with China. "We stand ready to provide appropriate consular assistance for U.S. citizens". Alibaba declined to comment, as did the Hangzhou police.

The shoplifting reports threaten that image, which has included LaVar Ball's creation of the "Big Baller Brand" shoe and apparel line "inspired" by his three sons.

The outspoken LaVar Ball has made regular headlines with his provocative comments since eldest son Lonzo began starring at UCLA previous year. "They have resumed their scheduled activities", Flynn said.

He is already a third of the way there.
