Attributing clear motives to the raid, Dhinakaran sought to know why his party leaders like Karnataka AIADMK secretary Pugazhendi, Tiruvarur district secretary S. Kamaraj and even his wife's former personal assistant (PA) Jana were being search and questioned.

Such premises also include some which are linked to Jaya TV, Dhinakaran, Sasikala, and her brother Divakaran and they all fall under the category of assessees tagged for suspected tax evasion, the official said.

The rebel leader, who refuted reports that I-T raids took place at his residence as well, said only a senior official from the income tax department came to his bungalow in the morning and left nearly immediately.

Late chief minister Jayalalithaa was the person who started the channel and has always been perceived to be favourably politically disposed towards Dhinakaran and Sasikala. Raids took place simultaneously at 187 locations in Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Delhi and Bengaluru.

The IT department will look at the routing of funds within India whereas other agencies will look into the routing of money outside India, the official said.

Following the factional divide in the ruling AIADMK, Jaya TV has been critical of the government led by chief minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami and deputy chief minister O. Panneerselvam. Jaya TV, which has been in the Sasikala camp's control, passes out news identified with the decision camp.

"Thursday's searches were of a massive scale and it was not possible to source department vehicles for all officials in Chennai".

Without naming the BJP, he said "we will not allow the party responsible for this (tax raids) in Tamil Nadu".

"A conspiracy is on", he said and added that it was to see that he and Chinnamma (Sasikala) "should not be in politics".

The Times of India reported that a team of 10 Income Tax officials entered the Jaya TV office at around 6 am. "By evening most of the private banks closed; so, today we are continuing with checking bank lockers mostly in branches of Axis Bank and Tamilnadu Mercantile Bank at Saidapet and Kottivakkam", said an official. If the Centre thinks they can destroy us by conducting such raids, they are day-dreaming.

The IT department, reports suggest, has explained that the raids are to unearth unaccounted money routed through shell companies.
