Amazon's Fire TV Stick sans Alexa launches in 100 countries

The only major difference here is that the Basic Edition doesn't have support for Alexa voice commands.

The Fire TV stick has an easy to use interface in the following languages: English, Spanish, French, Portuguese, Italian, and German. It allows users to access variety of media and streaming services, including Amazon Prime Video, Netflix, Hulu, YouTube, etc.

Amazon has done a lot to bolster its line of Fire TV streaming devices this year, but today it's launching one more device for the worldwide market.

Amazon's big goal with the Fire TV Stick Basic Edition is to bring the product to as many countries as possible, and with it being sold to over 100 different regions, the company certainly has that part of the plan down pat. In other words, we're looking at a 1.3 GHz quad-core MediaTek processor, 1 GB of RAM, and 8 GB of native storage.

Up until now, customers in most markets have been limited to watching Prime Video through an app on mobile phones and tablets, smart TVs, or through the Prime Video website. Whether or not that price hike is worth paying is ultimately up to you, but if you decide you want it, the Fire TV Stick Basic Edition is available now from Amazon. The retail giant rectified that today when it announced the Fire TV Stick Basic Edition, but to call it an upgrade would be a stretch. Alexa-enabled devices aren't available yet in many parts of the world which is the reason why Amazon may have made a decision to not include it on the Basic Edition, as pointed out by TechCrunch. The device also has support for 1080p Full HD video streaming with the High Efficiency Video Codec, as well as Dolby Audio for a higher-quality audio experience.

From what I could gather, the Basic Edition doesn't exist to replace 2016's Fire TV Stick, but as an option for the rest of the world. Notably, it costs more than the original - the $39.99 (Rs. 3,999 in India) Fire TV Stick - but has free shipping to eligible countries. It's a small dongle that plugs directly into an HDMI port on your TV or monitor, or even an HDMI switch if you'd like to easily move between sources. This may explain why it costs more than the regular version of the Fire TV Stick, which now sells for $39.99.

Pricing varies in each locality. The Fire TV Stick that was launched previous year runs Fire OS 5 based on Android Lollipop, but it is yet unknown what Fire OS version the Basic Edition runs.
