AJ Styles is the new WWE champion.

The following matches were taped earlier today in Manchester, England for tonight's WWE Smackdown television show.

WWE has been hyping up another champion vs. champion clash between Mahal and WWE Universal Championship holder Brock Lesnar. Styles will now move on to face Brock Lesnar at WWE Survivor Series in a "champion versus champion" match. The title change comes one day after Cesaro and Sheamus defeated Dean Ambrose and Seth Rollins on Raw to become WWE Raw Tag Team Champions.

It was originally announced that the tours in New Delhi, India would have WWE title matches with Jinder Mahal defending against Kevin Owens.

This marks The Phenomenal One's second reign as WWE Champion, and it is also the first time in history that the WWE Championship has changed hands outside of North America. People were not excited about the match, and WWE may have been feeling that they needed someone else in that spot with Lesnar to sell the "main event" of this month's brand vs brand PPV. Stick around after Smackdown for my live thoughts on the "Nature Boy" documentary on Ric Flair that will air on ESPN at 9CT/10ET.
