Sherin Mathews of Richardson, Texas, went missing on October 7. He told police that he had ordered her to stand near a tree outside of their home at about 3 a.m.as punishment for not drinking her milk, and that she was gone when he went to check on her about 15 minutes later.

After almost two weeks of searching by police using drones, her body was found on Sunday in a ditch near their house in the city near Dallas.

Although Wesley is now charged for felony injury to the child and the United States police has not slapped murder charges on him, Sushma Swaraj went on to say that Sherin was killed by her foster father.

He was being held in jail with bail set at $1 million.

Sherin, who was originally from Bihar, was adopted by Wesley Mathews with the help of an NGO in Bihar's Nalanda district. Her body was later found in the vicinity of the house following which Wesley Mathews reportedly changed his version, claiming the girl had choked to death while drinking milk.

The child began coughing and choking, her breathing slowed and then there was no longer any pulse, he told police.

In the wake of the incident, the ministry has chose to issue the passport for the adopted children only after approval by the Ministry of Child Development.
