"We need to take the situation how it is now and prepare our team for Sunday".

"Club officials have reviewed the footage of an incident that occurred in the 64th minute of the game against Olympique Lyonnais where supporters towards the front of the lower Gwladys Street End became involved in a confrontation between players", Everton said in a statement.

Everton have announced they will ban a fan involved in the on-field brawl during Thursday's 2-1 Europa League loss to Lyon after Merseyside Police confirmed an investigation into the incident.

In the second half, just moments after starting a fracas over a challenge with goalkeeper Anthony Lopes, Ashley Williams powered a header into the net from Gylfi Sigurdsson's free kick, before another Sigurdsson free kick hit the post as Everton gathered momentum.

One Everton supporter, who was carrying a child, appeared to swing out at Lopes during the melee.

Merseyside Police is also investigating the crowd trouble at Goodison Park after Everton registered a complaint with the force.

Everton restored parity when Ashley Williams headed home with 20 minutes to go, but Bertrand Traore quickly gave the advantage back to the away side.

Detectives will be reviewing footage and speaking to witnesses to establish what, if any, offences have been committed. But I am proud that we were strong at 1-1 we won the game despite everything.

"I think it is always good to know what is happening around the club", said Koeman. "That was just one of those times".

Earlier in the month, majority shareholder Farhad Moshiri released a statement pledging total support for the manager, support Ronald Koeman insists he still retains.

"I still believe in the players and the signings we did in the summer because maybe everybody can have some doubts about several of the signings". The Toffees sat bottom of their group with just one point from their opening two games going into the fixture.
