Lisa Wilkinson quits Nine to join rival network

Today Show newsreader Sylvia Jeffreys fought back tears paying tribute to her friend Lisa Wilkinson as the team bid farewell to their longtime colleague on the show this morning.

On Twitter, she posted a statement from Channel Nine, in which the network said it was "unable to meet the expectations of Lisa Wilkinson and her manager on a contract renewal".

Wilkinson's new salary at Channel 10 will make her the highest paid woman on Australian television.

Ten said in a statement that Wilkinson would join The Project and The Sunday Project in a hosting role, but none of the three hosts, Carrie Bickmore, Waleed Aly and Peter Helliar, are leaving. "In fact, I'm more than ok - I'm great".

Speaking on The Em Rusciano Radio Show with Harley Breen, she said: 'Lisa is loved by the female audience and has lifted Karl up as he became very unpopular with females after he divorce.

"I feel very privileged with all the opportunities I've been afforded over the years". Ten, which has a lower pay scale for on-air talent, is unlikely to be able to pay Wilkinson what she was used to at Nine, sources said.

The "I break up with Today" hashtag is also taking off on Twitter with threats to boycott the show for refusing to pay men and women equally.

"I think she's sending a very strong message to the community".

Ms Berejiklian, who replaced Mike Baird in NSW's top job past year, said Ms Wilkinson had her support if she'd acted based over a pay disparity.

"That would be akin to me getting a pay cut because my predecessors weren't female".

"I will be cheering her on as I always do as she takes on this next challenge".

Tim Gilbert, Deb Knight and Richard Wilkins all had kind words for Lisa.

Unverified reports claim Wilkinson had sought the same pay rate as her co-host Karl Stefanovic.

"For whatever reason she won't be doing that anymore and it was a surprise to us all", he said.

"It is safe to say we are all a little shocked and it will take time to sink in".

Sylvia Jeffreys had some attractive words for her friend Lisa Wilkinson.

"So for now this: Thank you".

"She's having a lovely sleep-in after an extraordinary day, thank you".

Peter believes Karl was in a better position to negotiate when he renewed his contract with Nine a year ago as 'he didn't have all this baggage of the marital thing'.

Through a window, a television tuned into the Today program could be seen playing in a family room, according to The Advertiser.

We express our gratitude to Lisa for her 10 years with the Today Show and are disappointed we find ourselves in this position.

'Nine will be going in another direction and will be considering our options in the coming weeks and months'.

Channel Nine's The Today Show has acknowledged it is a "very big" day for the program following the shock departure of co-host Lisa Wilkinson to join Network Ten, reportedly over a pay dispute.
