Pinarayi Vijayan's LDF government orders vigilance probe against ex-CM Oomen Chandy

Since the LDF government's announcement to initiate a Vigilance probe against former chief minister Oommen Chandy and those involved in the solar scam, all eyes have been glued to Saritha S Nair, the woman who is at the centre of the solar scam.

Chandy has also moved a right to information petition before the chief secretary to secure a copy of the full report, and told reporters in Kerala that he will quit politics if even a fraction of the charges against him were proven. The commission also found that Chandy's close aide and previous home minister Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan misused his powers to help save Chandy, Vijayan added, for which he too will be prosecuted under criminal charges by a special vigilance team. Insinuations were made at the then chief minister of financial impropriety and at a host of other Congress leaders in the state of having illicit physical relations with the main beneficiary of the scam - Saritha Nair - who reportedly floated a fictitious company promising imported solar panels.

"K C Joseph, in his complaint to the Assembly Speaker, along with an attachment of the press note circulated at the Chief Minister's press conference the other day, said it is for the first time in the history of the state a Chief Minister had explained the contents of a Commission report before publishing or tabling it in the Assembly".

The damage for the Congress doesn't stop there. "We are not scared of any investigation as we have not committed any fraud", he said.

Vijayan said a criminal case will be registered and the SIT will probe allegations of rape levelled by Saritha against some politicians in her letter dated July 17, 2013. The Commission has recommended that the sexual exploitation of Saritha S Nair by various accused persons should be brought under the purview of the anti-corruption law and investigated. She told the Deccan Chronicle, "One who was party to a crime along with me should be exposed, especially since he is a public worker".

The development has wide-ranging bearings on the Congress party in Kerala, one of the handful of states where it is strong.

The terms of reference for the SIT's investigation was decided by the UDF government unilaterally.

He said the Kerala unit of the CPI (M) considers Congress as its main enemy, while for the Congress, the BJP is the main opponent.

Justice Sivarajan Commission which investigated the Solar Scam had submitted its report to the state government, and it speaks of the direct involvement of the senior leaders of the Congress in Kerala in the scam.

T'Puram: The Congress High Command has barred state leaders from making public statements on the Solar Commission report until it is published. However, an official close to the CM's office said this was a coincidence, as the office had received legal counsel on the commission's findings only on Tuesday.
