Russian Bomber Skids Off Runway in Syria, Killing Crew

"On October 10, when accelerating ahead of takeoff from the Hmeymim airfield in Syria, a Su-24 aircraft veered off the runway and crashed".

He did not clarify how many people died, but the Su-24 usually has a crew of two.

An Su-24 military aircraft has crashed at Khmeimim Airbase in Syria after overshooting the runway, the Russian Defense Ministry reports.

Technical failure could be the reason of the accident, the Ministry added.

The Russian Defense Ministry confirmed the crash in a brief statement.

Reporters Without Borders says at least five journalists have been killed so far in 2017 in Syria.

Hmeymim base has been used by Moscow to launch air strikes against opponents of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

On Tuesday, the defense ministry said Russian planes are now carrying out 150 strikes per day in eastern Syria against ISIS. The aircraft had flown from Chkalovsky Airport in Russian Federation and had landed at Sochi to refuel. The pilot ejects safely.
