According to Jeremy Cross in the Daily Star, United manager Jose Mourinho is "confident" he can land Englishman Rose for £45 million next year, while the defender is aware he could double his wages with a move to Manchester.

A source said: "The lure of United is too strong for him and if he had the choice he would pick United hands down".

England worldwide defender Rose picked up a serious knee injury in January, while attacking midfielder Lamela has not played for Tottenham since October 2016 due to a hip injury.

Lamela is on course for a playing return this month as he completes the rehabilitation on his injured hip.

While recovering from his operation, Rose stunned Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino when he criticised the club in an interview and insisted he would be open to offers from other teams because he wants bigger wages.

Rose is contracted at the club until 2021 but is looking increasingly likely to leave. Already this season four different players have operated in the role-Ashley Young, Matteo Darmian, Daley Blind and Luke Shaw.

Mourinho has had a problem in the left-back position since he took charge and reckons Rose is the ideal solution.

The forward's last spell on the pitch saw him play 29 minutes of the Lilywhites' 2-1 EFL Cup defeat to Liverpool and, like Rose's injury, has proved much more problematic than the initial diagnosis made it out to be. Further, the move would also facilitate an assured spot in Gareth Southgate's England squad that will travel to Russian Federation for the World Cup in 2018.
